Many people experiencing premature hair loss simply resign themselves to a process that is as inevitable as old. This is a positive and healthy reaction to what is a natural process for many.

But for others the beginning of premature balding or excessive hair loss is a traumatic development that worries and untold suffering. This is a legitimate reaction regardless of whether the hair loss is caused by hereditary factors or other more complex cause. If these patients only grin and bear it? No, they should not because there are several potentially effective treatments they could use, depending on the nature of their hair loss. In this article I will outline some of the most popular hair loss treatments currently available to the fact that hair loss can be treated reinforcing.

The following article in the series will look closely at the most appropriate treatments for specific ailments such as alopecia areata and telogen effluvium. Currently only two drugs approved to treat hair loss by the FDA. These are Minoxidil, better known as Rogaine and finasteride, better known Propecia. Several other drugs have proven effective in combating hair loss, dutasteride for example, but not yet approved for this particular use.

Finasteride was originally developed to treat enlarged prostate conditions but a low dose version was subsequently approved for the treatment of hair loss in men. He addresses the causes of male pattern baldness by preventing the conversion of 5-alpha reductase into DHT. Given that DHT is het actual main male hormone linked to hair loss, reducing the production of two thirds has a major impact on controlling this type of baldness. Research has shown that 83% of men studied were able to get their hair count and 64% experienced regrowth by the end of maintaining a period of two years.

It should be noted that finasteride is approved for use by men only if the drug can have serious effects on unborn male fetuses. Women should therefore only consider using this drug under the strict supervision of a physician. Dutasteride (Avodart) is a new drug for use in treating prostate conditions and, although not yet approved for treating hair loss, offers exciting possibilities. It works in a similar way to finasteride but reportedly reduces overall DHT production by over 93%.

As is the case with finasteride, women should consult their physician before using dutasteride. Minoxidil (Rogaine) is the other hair loss treatment approved by the FDA and is the only anti-baldness drug approved for women. Applied locally, its main advantage is the ability to stimulate regrowth thus reversing the effects of baldness. Many users combine the application of minoxidil with other hair loss treatments like Propecia to achieve maximal results, but others experience satisfactory outcomes using minoxidil on its own. Several studies have shown that certain non-drug to promote hair regrowth but none have been approved by the FDA. This is partly due to the prohibitive costs involved in conducting trials to prove that the products are effective for the purpose of marketing them as hair loss treatments.

Many individuals and dermatologists do not recommend the use of certain non-drug treatments as an alternative or complement to drug therapy. In many cases the treatments are based on natural ingredients that stimulate similar responses to those of prescription drugs, but without the side effects. The information here is a sample of products are subject to testing or at the very least have supported their effectiveness by independent feedback. One such product is Arcon Tisane which has become Europe’s best selling natural supplement for hair loss.

It comes as a capsule and sub-lingual spray containing saw palmetto and fenugreek stimulating a response similar to that of finasteride by inhibiting the production of DHT. Arcon Tisane has been clinically tested and is widespread in the media received its success in the fight against hair loss. Calosol is a relatively new product aimed at helping alopecia areata suffering. It consists of a shampoo and an accelerator applied daily to stimulate hair roots, reduce hair loss and promote healthy hair. Early indications suggest that Calosol significantly contribute to alleviating this painful and difficult to treat disease.

Fabao 101 is a treatment that comes in various sizes, each designed to tackle a particular form of hair loss. Common factor in each product is their derivation from natural plant sources. It was developed by a dermatologist and has received numerous international awards. Folligen copper peptide products are designed to help to create an environment that improves scalp health, reduces hair loss and stimulates hair regrowth. It can be used by both men and women. Studies at more than 30 leading universities and medical research institutions have established the effectiveness of the technology used in Folligen products. Tricomin is another treatment that focuses on the delivery of copper to the base of the hair follicle and it has been clinically proven as an effective treatment for stopping hair loss and stimulating regrowth.

It can safely be used in combination with other treatments and hair loss can be especially helpful in addition to the effects of finasteride and minoxidil. Revivogen is an all-natural hair loss treatment that reduces DHT production, blocks androgen receptors and stimulates hair growth. It is used locally and has no known side effects. Shen Min is another natural hair loss treatment designed to restore all types and stages of hair loss and regrow. It is safe for both men and women.

Shen Min contains a blend of Chinese herbs and comes in various forms of suit most people. ThymuSkin was developed by German scientists to fight hair loss in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The high success rates the product was developed for use by the general public against all forms of hair loss. Clinical trials conducted in Europe show that hair loss treatments can help ThymuSkin baldness and regrow hair for stop 67% of men and 95% of women. Hopefully this article has demonstrated that many treatment options available for hair loss patients. The next article in this series will develop the theme further by examining the treatments that have proven effective in tackling specific forms of hair loss as androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and telogen effluvium.

In recent years, medicine has made enormous advances in the treatment of men for hair loss. With the arrival of the inhibitors 5-a-reductase inhibitors such as Propecia and the evolution of surgery for hair restoration, for many, it is not inevitable, living with a significant loss of hair.

For the first time in the history of mankind is now possible to stop or slow the progression of hair loss and replace lost hair through surgery with completely natural results. However, the vast majority of treatments for hair loss that are marketed today are still very doubtful.

The conclusion is that the vast majority of advertising for “treatment” does not work for the prevention and treatment of hair loss. If a hair loss treatment is not FDA approved or recommended by medical associations of hair, chances are you are losing valuable time and money. Remember that successful treatment of hair loss depends largely on an early intervention. It is essential to begin treatment with an effective product as soon as you notice the onset of hair loss.

The following two treatments have been clinically proven to successfully treat hair loss in men to varying degrees.

Finasteride, Proscar/Propecia

Finasteride is the generic name brand drug Propecia and Proscar. Finasteride was originally developed by Merck as a drug to treat enlarged prostate glands (Proscar). During the medical tests to men with prostate problems an intriguing side effect of hair growth was observed. Since finasteride had already been approved by the FDA to treat enlargement of prostate in men, the company Merck decided to pursue the possibility of developing finasteride as the first pill to treat male pattern baldness.

On December 22, 1997, the FDA approved a dose of 1 mg of finasteride in the treatment of androgenic alopecia in men (male pattern baldness). Propecia is the first drug in history to effectively treat male pattern baldness in the vast majority of men who use it.

How does Propecia work?

The success of finasteride in treating hair loss is due to its ability to specifically inhibit Type II 5-alpha-reductace, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The dose of 1 mg of finasteride can effectively lower DHT levels by 60% when taken daily.

The DHT is shrinking or miniaturization the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. This 60% reduction in DHT has been shown to halt the progression of hair loss in 86% of men who took the drug during clinical trials. 65% of trial participants experienced what was considered a substantial increase in hair growth.

At this point, the only effective medical treatment to stop the hair loss process is to reduce levels of DHT. The American Association of hair finasteride recommended as a first line of attack for all men interested in the treatment of male pattern baldness.
